Sugar, Chocolate, Heaven!

I am having my first really intense sugar craving since severely reducing sugary foods in my diet a few weeks ago (with the exception of my baby shower - seriously - no pregnant woman should withhold cake from herself at her own baby shower!).

Anyhow, rambling aside, I have been pretty good at not binging on ice cream, or chocolate chip cookies and milk (thanks for that habit, Dad!). But for some reason, right this second, as I sit on my couch and start planning my afternoon, all I can think about is making a batch of delicious homemade chocolate chip cookies and downing ALL OF THEM with a couple glasses of milk. Even better would be the store bought cookies that are sitting in the cupboard because I wouldn't have to wait half an hour for them. I am doing so well at resisting this urge, but it is also resulting in me being on the verge of a pregnancy meltdown (you know the ones - where you burst into tears over the most irrational thing because you can't help it?).

Normally there is plenty of fruit in the house and a sugar craving would be easily forgotten after shoving an apple in my mouth. However, today is grocery day, so there are no apples to be found. The only fruit we have is frozen and intended for smoothies. The catch is that I prefer to make my smoothies with a combination of frozen fruits and fruit juice. But now I am off the fruit juice (since it's loaded with sugar) and don't have any in the house anyhow. Smoothies made with water are just not the same!

So, for fear of losing my sanity over this sugar craving... I will indulge in a glass of ice cold water and ONE store bought chocolate chip cookie. Pathetic, I know!

Cloth Diapering!

The other night, Adam and I attended a free cloth diapering workshop put on by our local eco-friendly baby store, Podlings. It was fantastic!! Having spent the first 3 months of this pregnancy researching everything there was to know about cloth diapers, I thought it might be a bit too much of a review for me. However, I learned a lot more there than I did from all the books and websites I had read. Basically, my biggest bonus for going to the workshop was learning that I can wash cloth diapers on a heavy duty cycle using hot water, rather than going by the complicated instructions that come with the diapers - awesome!

And even though we had already picked out the diapers we planned to use (one size pocket diapers, or one size all-in-ones) we definitely saw a couple others that peaked our interest. I also hadn't thought about night time diapering, so it was great to see they have a fantastic diaper in the store if ours don't hold up for overnight use. Plus, we found a system that really appealed to us for travel. So if we fly across the country to visit family, instead of packing lots of bulky diapers and special detergents and wet bags, we can use a diaper cover with a compostable insert. I know it's not the most eco-friendly option - but it would be the exception to our otherwise very eco-friendly cloth diapers!

I can't wait to actually use our cloth diapers now instead of just staring dreamily at them while they sit on the shelf all lined up and colourful!

My bad...

I can't believe it's been almost a month since I updated my blog - oops! To be fair though, I've been busy with the before-baby-checklist and not so focused on the fun things like blogging or house projects. So what have I been up to all this time? You name it! I'm going through our house room by room in an attempt to organize, declutter (I am the complete opposite of a pack rat), and baby-ready each room. So far here's what I've accomplished (with a fair bit of help from Adam!):

Bedroom:
-accent wall painted
-crib assembled
-shelves put up
-change table area set up
-closet space set aside for blankets (soooo many blankets!)
-litterbox made much less accessible for baby, yet still accessible for Gabby
-curtains hung where there should be closet doors
-nursing area set up (rocking chair, books, lamp, pillows, etc)
-master bathroom organized with room for baby soaps, first aid stuff, nursing pads, etc

Living Room:
-toy shelf set up with bins and baskets for various toys and items
-space set aside on bookshelf for kid's books
-two desks removed for more floor space

Kitchen:
-baby proofed the cupboard under the sink that houses paint, cleaning supplies and pet food

To be fair, I didn't do all of this in the last month, but it's a pretty comprehensive list of house-related things that are done. With only 10 weeks to go though, the to-do list seems to be growing rather than shrinking!
